Awareness

While I believe that no art should be censored, I also try not to have an absolute as to what art is or isn’t.  With that being said, I do not think a child should be reading curse words, or that my parents should be reading an essay where I use sexual metaphors. So, even though I think there should be freedom to explore and express, I also think that there should be a level of respect. Also, in trying to keep up with being open to what art is or isn’t, I must admit that I do not think things like a racist poem qualify as art.  This then brings me to my writing (or other such art), where I think an idea or a feeling may be explored–it does not mean that I believe or do not believe anything in absolute or concrete form.  For this reason, I would also have to ask to keep in mind that art is interactive. Can reader and viewer participation alter or make or reshape, or even give the “absolute” meaning to something? :) Finally, art itself may be an abstract concept within a vacuum and/or vastness. (It’s also for this reason, that–at least at this point–I will not be answering what I mean, why I wrote or drew, etc.)

Okay. So, as I am still very much in the process stage of laying the foundation here, please use your brain and some discrestion. Awareness.

  6. Some people will always be spoilsports. They need to criticize and judge. Most of the time, they never wrote a decent thing in their lives.

I guess that’s the way the world goes.

    Keep flowing!

  7. Thanks bunches! A very needed comment. Thank you! :)

  8. You are very welcome! It happened to me before, so I know the feeling. ;-)

  9. definitely agree…”art” can be a loaded word, and best left, i believe, basically undefined. i also believe RILLY strongly in (almost) absolute freedom of expression, but also realize there need to be, quite simply, boundaries in place in terms of exposure based upon a person’s comfort level/maturity level, etc…i, myself, don’t think a child should necessarily not be exposed to curse words, but there’s certainly an awful lotta poetry (of mine) out there that i would want younger ones to be shielded from…learning about the vastness of the world, and beginning to get a handle on less “appropriate” material, i think, should first be grounded in understanding sex as a way a person expresses love, something infinite and to be respected as a powerful force…and i believe in teaching children also, that therefore it can be powerfully corrupted…obviously, this is a huge and long process best taught in continual small doses age-appropriate…

and i, as well, have an awful lotta work i don’t think my parents could handle…

    peace,

  10. Thank you for such a thoughtful response. :) I completely get what you mean, about it not being the words themselves and so forth… it’s actually inspired me to maybe delve a little further with these ideas, and I’ll be trying to get a post up soon. Also, I really like that you said “art” is something best left undefined. It would kinda make sense, that something abstract is left abstract, eh? Again, thank you for reading and for the comment. :)
